Nearly three decades after Practical Magic cast its spell, Joey King and Maisie Williams they enter the Owens family as Sandra Bullock’s grown daughters in a sequence that gives the next generation of witches their magic.

The two actors said joining a cast that included Bullock and Nicole Kidman was “a little scary.” Almost 30 years after the original, they are the next generation of Owens witches learning about their magic.

King plays Kylie and Williams plays Antonia, the grown daughters of Bullock’s Sally Owens, who find their supernatural ancestors the way Sally and her aunt Gillian (Kidman) did in the 1998 film. Evan Rachel Wood played young Kylie in the original.

The sequel is directed by Susanne Bier (The Bird Box) and is based on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel The Magic Book. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing return as Aunts Jet and Frances, with Lee Pace, Xolo MaridueƱa, and Solly McLeod joining the cast. It opens in theaters on September 11, 2026.

The Owens family curse (killing the men they love) is still playing out. The trailer shows Kylie trying to fix herself and ending up on a dark path, with her sisters and aunts chasing her to find out where their magic comes from.

King and Williams talked about the roles on stage at the 2026 Teen Vogue Fest with Vogue’s Chloe Malle. “You never stop learning and growing from the people you work with, so learning and growing from Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman was fun and a little stressful,” Williams said.

The king was not yet born when the first one came out. He first saw it at 9 or 10 and remembers being scared before it became a rewatch favorite. Williams watched it with her mother, and it still brings back happy childhood memories.

The generations also switched subjects: King and Williams taught Bullock and Kidman “the wig,” and Bullock taught them “6,7.” There is a panel discussion where veterans congratulate their young actors as leading ladies and producers.
At press conferences, the cast said they would lean towards ’90s, magic, and dramatic looks, with Williams describing Antonia’s on-screen style as more ’50s. “Lots of lace, funny colors… the colors in this movie are so beautiful,” King said.
