Discord age verification: How it works, if it ever does

Age verification is spreading on the Internet. To follow The launch of Roblox of the age verification process, Discord is the next platform in line to do it.

How to verify your age on Discord
Discord, the most popular online chat platform for gamers, has it announced that it will roll out a mandatory age verification process for all its users from March.

Users will encounter a immediately asking them to verify their age when the age verification system goes live worldwide next month. To start the process, users need to click the Start button on the pop-up.
Next, users will be prompted to upload a selfie or government ID photo. In some cases, if the age verification system has trouble estimating a user’s age from a selfie, the user will be required to submit both a selfie and an ID.

According to Discord, uploaded selfies and IDs are deleted after the verification process is completed.

Once the user has submitted this information, they will receive a DM on Discord informing them that they have been placed in the youth or adult age group.
What happens if you don’t verify your age on Discord?
According to Discord, all user accounts going forward will be automatically renewed. This is exactly what it is. All users, by default, will be included in the youth group. Youth will not need to participate in the age verification process as their accounts are already entered in the appropriate age group.
However, in order to view certain content and participate in certain platform experiences, adults will need to verify their age to be included in the adult age group. If an adult does not verify their age, their account will be placed in the youth group.
Discord defaults to a new experience for all users
New accounts will not be able to see certain content. Sensitive content will be blacked out by Discord. The only way to remove content obfuscation or change that content setting globally will be to verify your age to be placed in an age group. Discord users in the youth group will also not be able to access age-restricted channels, servers, and app commands.
When it comes to direct messages, youth group accounts will have a separate inbox for messages from users they don’t already know on the site. Youth group users will also receive alerts when they receive friend requests from users they may not know.
Additionally, youth group users will not be able to speak on stage on the Discord servers.
Users who pass the age verification process and are considered to be under the legal age of their country (13 years old in the US) will be permanently banned from Discord.
If the age verification process incorrectly marks a user as a minor, Discord has appeal process that users can follow as well.
Discord has already rolled out an age verification process in the UK and Australia to comply with local laws. The company says it will continue to roll out the program globally “in early March.”
