Why your robot vacuum stopped working: It may need to be cleaned

Content

Robot vacuums are annoying when they’re working well – and especially annoying when they’re not. (A broken dishwasher couldn’t provoke the anger of stepping on crumbs that should have been easily absorbed by a robot.) If your robot vacuum doesn’t clean the floor as well as it used to, think about how long it’s been since then. you clean your robot vacuum.

Obviously, the average life span also plays a role in the reduction of robot vacuum capabilities. Most robot vacuums last between three and six years, suffering from normal wear and tear, aging technology, and batteries that can deteriorate over time. But if it’s a recent purchase, the sudden crappy performance may be your entry point to a robot that begs for cleaning.

A monthly maintenance routine is the best way to keep your vacuum in top condition for as long as possible. From strange noises to loss of suction, here’s a checklist for when your robot vacuum is working.

My robot vacuum just pushes dirt

Losing suction doesn’t mean your robot vacuum is on the fritz. The tag line “set and forget” is a great selling point for self-emptying robots, but it’s a catch-all. again literally a recipe for some kind of blockage that weakens the power of absorption. There are a few parts of the interior that can get crowded here.

Check out the brushes: Long hair starts to tangle on the vacuum brush after a few months, even on the locks with the elite anti-tangle brushes. Those tangled hairs can be so thick that they prevent the brush from turning properly, preventing tangles and hair loss. (I had a similar experience with fake snow pulled from under our Christmas tree.) Every week or two, turn on the vacuum and pull or cut off any trapped hair.

Check the filter: Neglecting the vacuum filter is a common practice among robot vacuum owners, despite the fact that a clogged vacuum filter is guaranteed to affect suction power. If the filter is covered with dust bunnies, the engine does not have the breathing room to draw air in to create suction in the first place. The gray gun grows faster than you think.

The filter should be washed and air-dried at least every two weeks, more often if you have many pets (or allergies). They are usually located under the hood near the dust bin. Most robot vacuums come with a replaceable filter in the box.

Check the dust bins again dust methods: A full dustbin is probably the most “duh” maintenance problem that can cause your robot vacuum to spit out debris. Also, most robotic vacuuming apps will notify you when the dust bin needs to be replaced. But you’ll also want to make sure there are no dust paths backed up, such as openings where debris enters the vacuum or where debris is drawn from the vacuum into the hole.

A couple of heavy-duty mopping tests I did recently resulted in dry queso and strawberry daiquiri thickened in the ways of two high-end robots. It was not only cleaning, but a reminder of how easily parts can be connected.

My robot vacuum is making a strange noise

You know what your robot vacuum normally sounds like. So if you hear a sudden shrill sound, or it’s just too loud out of nowhere, there’s probably something trapped underneath. Oftentimes, it’s a large or oddly shaped object that the vacuum probably shouldn’t have tried to suck up. It may be stuck somewhere in the bottom of the vac or it may already be gurgling inside the barrel.

Off the top of my head, I’ve had to rescue small nail files, skincare spray caps, twisted ties, and a spider ring from the bottom of the robot compartment. If you have cats, don’t underestimate the variety of small plastic items that can be found around the house.

How to make your robot vacuum work better: 3 setup tips you should do right now

One of my cats love playing with bobby pins, especially by putting a bolt in the back of furniture or with his tunnel to drive them across the hardwood floor. I try my best to pick them all up before sending the robot vacuum to clean them up, but sometimes I miss a few bad ones. At one point, the Dreme X60 Max Ultra was scrubbing my kitchen and making an unpleasant scratching sound. I flipped it over to find three bobby pins attached to a magnet between the rotating mopping pads.

Your robot vacuum app should alert you when there’s a large clog that includes a sock, but small soft objects like tissues or pet toys may also cause the odd noise.

My robot vacuum pad stinks

There is a huge crowd looking for a non-clogging robot vacuum. Keeping up with mildewy mopping pads and leaky water tanks is not good for them. That’s valid, especially when we’re talking about basic 2-in-1 models that don’t wash and dry their mopping pads. But even the best robot vacuum and mop combos can be difficult if not properly maintained,

Most of us are all too familiar with the smell of wet clothes that have been accidentally left in the washing machine overnight. Damp wash pads smell the same as they are tucked into the floor or wall of the dock – even self-wash pads start to turn brown and need a formal wash day once a month or so.

The good news is that almost all robot vacuum mopping pads are machine washable. It will be attached with velcro, magnets, or a click or slide device. Most vacuums come with a spare pad in the box, so you don’t have to wait for another to be ready. Roller mops usually come out under vacuum with the click of a button, and you can hand wash them with dish soap. I also use my hypochlorous acid spray which is an emotional support, very effective, and non-toxic odor killer and disinfectant.

Otherwise, the dock itself might be bad.

The mopping pad bay where the robot vacuum packs will be charged can be a breeding ground for germs if it is not cleaned weekly. Except for a short period of time when the robot vacuum is out, that area does not see the light of day. The air flow used to dry the mopping pads is not enough to completely remove the moisture-prone area, which is covered with layers of dirt returned by your robot vacuum from multiple cleanings.

After I sent the Dreme Aqua10 Ultra Roller to clean up a spilled strawberry daiquiri, I found a few pink splatters both under the vacuum itself and on the dock’s mop tray. Until I did both a good cleaning, there was a slight smell of strawberry in the stock and wherever the Aqua10 was wrapped. I wasn’t about to go barefoot on that.

If there is a lot of spillage in your house, clumps of pet hair can end up blocking the fan vents completely, which can lead to an ineffective ventilation system.

My robot space is suddenly lost

If the problem is related to charging or not turning on at all, you’ll want to check the warranty or talk to customer service. Not all cleaning tips can solve technical or software errors. However, navigation blips can be due to something as simple as dirty sensors – a robot vacuum that is used regularly encounters a lot of different splatters and puffs of dust. Use a microfiber cloth to gently wipe the front lenses, as well as the sensors located on the dock near the charging magnets.

Moving furniture can trigger a smart-mapping robot vacuum, although many of the robots coming out from 2025 and 2026 can update their maps in real-time if they detect a change in a room’s layout.

I once tried to move the robot vacuum a foot from its original position in the corner, just to face it against a different wall to put the lamp in the old place. The vac got confused enough that it refused to return to the dock, requiring re-mapping.
