This is a security measure, which is a breath of fresh air in this space as many similar sites do not bother – but it is very easy to create an anonymous account even without an email, so it is difficult to say how safe this requirement is.

Yes, Thundr is free to use, including all the filtering options mentioned above. The only payment method that Thundr offers is something called Boost. Boost is a one-time purchase that puts you at the front of the Thundr match queue from 10 to 60 minutes, making it more likely that you will be matched with high-quality users. Thundr doesn’t say much about Boost on the site itself, but when they introduce it, the the creator of Thundr took to Reddit to explain: “All that happens is that when a user is promoted, they are temporarily higher in the match queue. This means they are more likely to be matched with what the platform thinks are the highest quality users.”

Is Thundr available on mobile?
Thundr is browser only and does not currently have a dedicated app, but you can use it on your phone through your mobile browser. Note that the mobile version works differently than the desktop version. On desktop, the experience mirrors classic Omegle, with a skip button in the corner of your screen next to your camera feed to go to the next person. On mobile, that button is still there, but users can swipe up to skip it.

Is Thundr safe?
A difficult question to answer. Thundr says he has nailing around the edges (meaning that Thundr and other third parties can’t see messages), free data sharing, and AI moderation, and it seems to be doing everything it can to keep sane users in their corner of the site. But this does not always work. You have to do something for Thundr to recognize sex to end up in the NSFW zone, which means someone could expose an unsuspecting user to revealing content to trigger the algorithm.
Here is another objection. In Thundr’s FAQ part, the question “How does Thundr’s free video chat allow me to chat with strangers safely?” is answered as follows:
“Every live video or text session is end-to-end encrypted and protected by real-time AI that instantly blocks nudity, hate speech, and spam. You can report, skip, or mute any stranger with one tap, so you can enjoy free video chat without compromising security.”
This is false. Just because Thundr isolates transparent users in their corner doesn’t mean nudity is blocked. It just means that it is being pushed somewhere else. When you come across Thundr, you will be aware of the amount of bubbles that appear on the screen repeatedly, which would not have happened much earlier. That doesn’t stop nudity, it just does something about it.
Adding an authenticated login requirement is a great step, but anyone can have an email without verifying their age (or create an anonymous account without an email and do the same). Children under the age of 18 can access Thundr just as easily as adults, and given what can pass for moderation, that’s a big problem.
Final thoughts on Thundr
Thundr does something most other sites don’t: it requires users to sign in. Although Thundr doesn’t say it outright, this holds people accountable in a way. This will push the number of bad actors who intend to use Thundr for the wrong reasons, ultimately making Thundr much safer than many other Omegle alternatives.
