‘Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ finale: Where will Dunk and Egg go next?

Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ The first season may be over, but Dunk (Peter Claffey) and Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) have a long journey ahead of them.

The show has already been renewed for a second season, and there’s plenty of George RR Martin’s Dunk and Egg stories to take in, so attention now turns to what might be next for our intrepid duo.

The thing is, even if Dunk seems to end the season without knowing where he wants to go next, clues do point to one obvious place. Let’s strip it down.

‘Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Targaryen family tree: How everyone connects

What happened to Dunk and Egg at the end of the episode?

Dunk goes from being a man with nowhere to be at the beginning of the season to a man with many contributions by the end of the season – but in the end, the open road and the life of a hedge knight beckons.

After assuring his new friend Raymun Fossoway (Shaun Thomas) that he does not plan to return to Storm’s End with Ser Lyonel Baratheon (Daniel Ings), Dunk takes his horses and begins to move. “I don’t know, Chestnut, stop asking me,” he muttered. “Where would the old man go?”

However, as he is on his way, Egg catches him, lying to Dunk that his father has given him permission to be Dunk’s squire. While riding their horses, the two have the following exchange:

Egg: “Where are we going, sir?”

Dunk: “I don’t know. I think we could go anywhere in the seven kingdoms, though I’ve never been to D—”

Egg: “Nine.”

Dunk: “What?”

Egg: “There are nine kingdoms, sir.”

Dunk: “What?”

Egg: “Empire.”

Dunk: “Are you crazy?”

Egg: “Is that compatible?”

Dunk: “There are seven kingdoms, boy. Everyone knows that.”

Egg: “Then everyone is wrong.”

Dunk: “Do you want to shut up?”

Egg: “Crownlands, Westerlands, Stormlands, Riverlands, Iron Islands, North, Reach, Vale of Arryn, and Dorne.”

Dunk: “No, but…”

Egg: “I’ve never been through the red mountains before. I hear they have some great animation shows in Dorne.”

We end the season not knowing exactly where they are headed. But at the same time, all the indicators seem to be pointing in the same direction.

Where will Dunk and Egg go next?

We know that after escaping Ashford, Tanselle (Tanzyn Crawford) and her band of puppeteers fled to Dorne – hence Egg’s last comment about “good puppet shows.” Before being interrupted by Egg, Dunk seems about to say, “I’ve never been to Dorne,” and Egg’s comment that he’s never “been over the red mountains” refers to the mountain range that separates Dorne from their current location in The Reach.

If you look closely at the last shot of them riding in the field, you can even see a mountain in the distance – probably the red mountains that Egg is talking about.

The conclusion? Unless it’s a big red herring, it seems pretty clear that Dunk and Egg is the least planning to Dorne next. Whether they’ll already be there by the time Season 2 starts, or if they’ll still be on the way, is another question.

Knight of the Seven Kingdoms now streaming on HBO Max.
