How to spot AI e-books and audiobooks in the Kindle Store and beyond

Content
If you spend any time online – whether you wanted to – you’ve encountered AI. Whether AI is a passion or a concern, it’s hard to avoid either way. For those who prefer to be more analog and spend more time with their head in a book than the internet, you might think you can easily avoid AI, but we have bad news. AI comes with your books, too.
AI-authored books populate the e-book and audiobook markets on both Libby and the Kindle Store. Fortunately, AI-narrated audiobooks are easy to spot if you know what to look for. IE-books, on the other hand, is where things get a little complicated. If you want to keep AI out of your Kindle or e-reader library, here’s how to see AI-generated e-books and audiobooks in the Kindle store and beyond.
How to identify books written by AI
Identifying AI-authored books is tricky as that information can be exposed. Kindle Direct Publishing, a platform where indie and self-published authors upload their books directly to the Kindle store, requires authors to disclose whether their book contains AI-generated or assisted content; however, that disclosure is not shared publicly.
So what should you do? Here’s how we recommend targeting AI-authored books.

Search for the author’s name

If you find a book online and have your suspicions about AI, the best thing to do is to search for the author’s name. An internet search should direct you to the publisher’s website or information, but if the search yields nothing, it’s probably AI.
Some of the AI-authored content appears somewhat legitimate, including the GoodReads page, but check the list carefully. If an author seems to have more random topics or published work than is realistically possible, that’s another sign that it’s AI and not a human writing it.
Check for typos in the title and description

“We promise” and “We promise you” are clear signs of AI-written content.

A common tactic of AI-generated books is to copy popular titles, so if you look at a title and it appears to be less popular, there’s probably a reason for that. AI-written content often gives itself unusual words and typos. Read the title and descriptions carefully for errors, as that usually means it was generated with AI and did not receive human editing.
Check out the cover art generated by AI

If you don’t want AI anywhere in your book, you should also check the cover. The art of AI is becoming more and more beautiful these days, and as such, you may not notice it right away. We have tested several tools to detect AI creativity, and AI or Not has an 80 percent success rate.
How to recognize AI audiobooks
Check the narrator

AI-narrated audiobooks will have a virtual voice, a digital voice, or an integrated voice narrator.

Even if the book isn’t written with AI, that doesn’t mean the audiobook is safe. AI-narrated audiobooks are so common, Libby users see books with a digital voice or synthesized voice listed by the narrator. Unlike AI innovation, AI narratives are transparent and easy to see.
