Oscars 2026: The worst moments from the 98th Academy Awards

The beauty of live television is that anything can happen, and nowhere is that truer, more shockingly, than at the Oscars. The Academy Awards likes to present itself as the pinnacle of Hollywood beauty, but the event has an almost proud history of producing moments that range from abject chaos to La La Land / Moonlight Best Picture Brawl for the truly unhinged, like Will Smith walking up on stage and beating the hell out of Chris Rock in front of every famous person in the world.

The point is: Something is always going to happen. This year, however, was a quiet night, the biggest event being the seventh tie in Oscars history for Live-Action Short Film.

Kevin O’Leary bet Kalshi

To kick things off, Kevin O’Leary, this one Shark Tank entrepreneur and supporting star of Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme, arrived on the red carpet and let everyone know that he bet $1,000 on Timothée Chalamet winning Best Actor on the infamous prediction market place Kalshi. Unsurprisingly, this has now led to a snowball effect of people betting on Chalamet.

Conan O’Brien as Aunt Gladys

In what can only be described as business as usual, Oscars host Conan O’Brien took to the stage dressed as Aunt Gladys from the show. Weapons – the scene-stealing villain that earned Amy Madigan a Best Supporting Actress win – and somehow made it funnier than it had any right to be.

Live-Action Short Film Oscar is a tie??

In a period that sent a real shock to the event that has been around for almost a century, the Live Action Short Film category produced the seventh tie in the history of the Academy Awards, no. Two People Exchanging Spit again Singers.

The chaos that followed was, frankly, complete – when the crew left Two people took the stage to open the mic, the Academy apparently decided they’d heard enough and pulled the mic mid-speech, in either the biggest technical error or the worst move in Oscars history.

Oscar’s ‘Golden’ speech is cut and sent to commercial

The Academy’s violent relationship with the clock has claimed another victim there KPop Demon Hunters’ “Golden” took home Best Original Song and the team that accepted the song, in the middle of the speech, was unceremoniously cut off and immediately sent to commercial without a pause – a significantly worse ending than the Live Action Short situation at the beginning of the night, where at least the parties were finally allowed to finish their thoughts.
