Samsung Stops Sales of Galaxy Z TriFold After Just 3 Months

If you haven’t shelled out nearly $3,000 for the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold yet, you might be missing your chance. The company is shutting down sales of the foldable phone less than two months after launching it in the US.

But it wasn’t for lack of interest — the device was a hot seller in the US and South Korea. Although the window was small, it gave Samsung a chance to showcase its design expertise and gauge customer interest.

All units available in Samsung’s home market of South Korea have been sold out, Samsung said in a statement, but customers in other countries can still buy the device. In the US, the only way to buy the TriFold is on Samsung’s website or at one of its seven Experience Stores nationwide.

“Galaxy Z TriFold is introduced as a premium device at limited prices,” Samsung said.

News of the foldable phone sales situation was previously reported by Bloomberg.

A quick check of Samsung’s website didn’t show any TriFold phones for sale, though Bloomberg said people reported being able to buy the phone in the past few days at Experience Stores in Frisco, Texas, and Queens, New York. On the Galaxy Z TriFold subreddit, some people reported that they were able to get their hands on one.

The Galaxy Z TriFold was announced on Dec. 1, 2025, premiered in South Korea on Dec. 12 and went on sale in the US on Jan. 30. The phone has a 6.5-inch cover screen and two hinges that enable it to be unfolded into a larger 10-inch screen. The price of the phone is $2,899.

The device was apparently not intended to be a regular part of Samsung’s product lineup, but instead a “flagship display” to demonstrate Samsung’s ability to build a triple-core phone, according to South Korean newspaper Dong-A Ilbo. A source said only 3,000 units were sold on each of two days — the day of release, December 12, and five days later on December 17.

Francisco Jeronimo, vice president of consumer devices at technology research firm IDC, said demand for the Galaxy Z TriFold shows that trifold phones are “a segment with clear long-term potential.”

“For example, Huawei sold 1.2 million units of its triple devices, generating an estimated revenue of $3.2 billion, which is a quick but strong indication of consumers’ desire for larger, multiple devices,” said Jeronimo. “Samsung’s iteration should be understood as part of Samsung’s broader exploration strategy in foldable and hybrid device design.”

Dong-A Ilbo quoted an unnamed industry expert as saying that the phone is more of an “image product created to show off its technological prowess than to make a profit through sales.”

In any case, the cost of production would prohibit mass production of the Galaxy Z TriFold. The cost of components such as DRAM, NAND flash and processors have increased this year, in part due to “demand for AI-related workloads,” according to market research firm TrendForce. DRAM is the main working memory of the phone, NAND flash is the storage technology, and application processors use operating systems such as Android, iOS and Linux.

CNET’s take: ‘It’s not for everyone’

We loved the Galaxy Z TriFold when it debuted earlier this year in the US, and apparently so did many Americans — it. sold out in minutes on its first day in the US.

CNET Senior Writer Abrar Al-Heeti he spent two weeks with the wrap and called it “versatile, innovative and practical,” although ultimately it’s not a tool for everyone.

He wrote in his review that he enjoyed the versatility of the TriFold, noting that it can double as a work surface or tablet for watching movies or multitasking. But a price tag of nearly $3,000, he said, is a lot to ask of the average phone buyer.

“Still, this phone embodies what foldable phones have long strived to be,” he wrote. “And honestly, it’s a joy to use.”

Will the TriFold make a comeback? Bloomberg reported that Won-Joon Choi, chief executive of Samsung’s Mobile Experience Business, said in an interview last month that the company had not decided whether to bring the device — or an updated version — to the wider market.

If you are interested in other triple phones, be sure to check back Huawei Mate XT Ultimate (not sold in the US) and Tecno’s Phantom Ultimate G, which the company showed at MWC 2026 as a concept.
