The best vacuums for pet owners in 2026: Cordless and robot vacuums tested at home

Some vacuums I’ve tested recently

I’ve reviewed some of the top robot vacuums in the past two years that didn’t make the most recent cut on this list. Others, like the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, the Roborock Qrevo Master, the Narwal Freo X Ultra, and various versions of the Roomba j7, were once my top recommendations, but have since been overshadowed by newer, more powerful models that are the best bang for your buck. Recently, in the last few months of 2025, I have been impressed with the Roomba Plus 505 Combo, Plus 405 Combo, and Narwal Freo Z10 Ultra. Ultimately they weren’t the most thorough vacuum cleaners in their price range.

New robotics spaces announced at CES 2026

Several top robot vacuum brands introduced new flagship models at CES in early January. These include the Roborock Saros 20 Sonic and Qrevo Curv 2 Flow, Dreme X60 Max Ultra Complete, and Narwal Flow 2. I will be testing them at home as soon as possible and will update this guide accordingly once they are all officially available for purchase.

How to choose a robot vacuum for pet hair

Let’s dive deeper into the features that can make or break your experience in trusting a robotic vacuum cleaner to clean your pets.

Suction power and brush rolls

I recommend vacuums with a suction power of at least 8,000 Pa to effectively pick up pet hair, although homes with heavy carpeting and more than two pets should consider a suction power of at least 12,000 Pa. But the brush roll system is almost as important when choosing a pet dander vacuum. In my testing, vacuums with dual brush rolls work best. For reference, the most powerful robot vacuums in 2025 were between 20,000 and 30,000 Pa of suction power, and the new robot vacuums coming out in 2026 are up to 35,000 Pa.

Automatic unloading

Pet parents should choose a self-emptying robot vacuum – so much hair suction will lead to a full dustbin quickly, and you won’t feel like emptying it yourself every day. Even with daily use, the auto-empty robot vacuum can last between one and three months before you need to empty the bin.

Bleeding

If hardwood or tile floors abound in your home, the best robot vacuum and pet hair mop combo will be able to clean floors while mopping and washing its mops to remove any lingering hair. Mopping is also more likely to successfully remove other small pet-related debris, such as pet dander and cat dust, that are too small to be absorbed by the vacuum’s suction power.

Smart map

Some rooms or lower spots between those rooms are hairier than others. The smart space-mapping robot learns the layout of your home and can head to specific locations with commands, which you can input online from the app. In my opinion, the smart map is the most important feature of a robot vacuum, and it should be the basis even when looking for a cheap model – cleaning performance is a pointless point if the vacuum can’t get where it needs to go in the first place.

Avoiding small obstacles

Some advanced robot vacuums use cameras and 3D sensors to identify any small road obstacles in the cleaning path in front of them. If successful, these vacuums save themselves from eating pet toys, ropes, laundry, or socks or shoes, avoid getting into pet dishes, and avoid pet waste.
